Carole James MLA Report - May 2014

Over the past few weeks, I have heard from many constituents concerned about the provincial government’s Bill 24. This bill threatens to undermine B.C.’s Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), established in 1973 by the New Democrat government of the day to protect farmland from development.

It was contentious at the time, and has been threatened many times in the years since. But over the last 40 years, it has proven to be the foundation for the province’s agricultural sector, ensuring a bounty of locally-grown food while protecting B.C.’s very limited farmland.

Growing up, I lived in a household that valued education. My family raised my sister and me, along with numerous foster children, to understand and appreciate the role that education plays for every child, for our community, and for our society.

My mum was a special education teacher for 30 years, and I remember fondly every August, excited for the start of the new school year, where we would all join in to help set up her classroom.

I saw first-hand the difference that education and supports for all children can make.

After 200 days without sitting, the government at last called the Legislature back into session February 11th to table a throne speech that sadly shows it is more concerned with self-interest than the needs of British Columbians. The speech is woefully short on substance or action to deal with pressing needs in our communities.

Carole James MLA Report – February 2014

The last few months have been a busy time with outreach and activities at my Victoria-Beacon Hill community office. More than 100 people came out to mingle at our Holiday Open House in December, and it was wonderful to connect and chat about issues and concerns. Many took time to sign “Let’s tackle poverty!” postcards, which Opposition MLAs will present to the government once the Legislature resumes this month.
