Carole James MLA Report – December

It was twenty-four years ago this month that fourteen women were massacred at École Polytechnique de Montréal in the worst mass murder in Canadian history. The attacker also injured ten other women and four men, before turning the gun on himself.

The day of the massacre, December 6th, has become the National Day for Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. In the years since, we’ve made some progress in the effort to end sexualized violence and violence against women.

Carole James MLA Report – November

Earlier this year I met with a group of parents of young people who have struggled with mental health issues. These families shared heartbreaking stories of trying to get help, being told to go to the emergency room at the hospital, and then being sent home without supports in place.

I spoke with parents who had lost a child to suicide and nothing will take that pain away.

Families are calling out for assistance; they are doing everything they can to support their children, and are frustrated and heartbroken at the lack of services.

Carole James MLA Report – October

Contrary to what the B.C. government seems to think, one size doesn’t fit all. But that seems to be the direction this government is taking with a number of services and supports in our communities.

The latest example is the rigid new service model in the area of employment skills. Moves by the government to force social service agencies into this new system is causing all sorts of problems. It’s easy to see that the entire approach needs to be revisited.

Carole James MLA Report – August

Government has a core responsibility to care for children and youth, and especially for those who need support services. British Columbia must ensure that our children and youth are a top priority.

I am pleased and honoured to be named the Opposition Critic for Children and Family Development. I care deeply about this work, and have a particular interest in it, as I’ve been a foster parent, worked in residential care, aboriginal child and family services, cooperative preschools, and served as Director of Child Care for the province.
